Chemnitz – Alte Markthalle
KuWiKu Chemnitz
KuWiKu at the Alte Markthalle Chemnitz.
Art, science and culture beneath the historic roof of the Alte Markthalle – in the heart of the city, right on the River Chemnitz.

The hall
A building with a history.
The Chemnitz market hall opened on 9 December 1891 – after just 18 months of construction, under the direction of Eduard Hechler, the city’s first municipal architect. A brick building with a steel frame, glazed central nave and dome; to locals it is still known as the ‘Belly of Chemnitz’.
KuWiKu turns the Alte Markthalle into a venue for major exhibitions: internationally acclaimed formats that you don’t just look at – you step inside them. Historic architecture meets contemporary staging.
